The Joseph and Hyrum Legacy Foundation is a faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the remarkable legacy of Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith while supporting and strengthening their descendants through service, education, humanitarian outreach, and responsible stewardship.
We believe that a legacy is more than history—it is a living inheritance. By honoring the faith, sacrifice, and enduring influence of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, we seek to inspire current and future generations to build stronger families, deepen their faith in Jesus Christ, and serve one another with compassion.

Our Mission

Our mission is to illuminate the life and legacy of Joseph and Hyrum Smith through artistic and educational efforts which attest to their unfailing devotion to one another and additionally bear witness to Joseph's divinely directed mission to restore the gospel and gather Israel. Moreover, our mission is to seek out, strengthen, and bless the descendants of Joseph and Hyrum through love, friendship, education, and service so that their hearts will be turned to their fathers.

Meet the Board

Merrill Osmond, Founder

A beloved lead singer of the Osmonds, Merrill Osmond has spent more than sixty years performing for audiences around the world while championing faith, family, and Jesus Christ. Following a sacred experience concerning the Prophet Joseph Smith, he founded the Joseph and Hyrum Legacy Foundation to help gather and bless Brother Joseph's descendants and to strengthen the latter-day gathering of Israel. A gifted composer and performer from Ogden, Utah, he now devotes his life and talents to telling the story of two brothers whose legacy continues to touch hearts across the world.

Mike Malcom, Chairman

Mike Malcom is a retired business leader in the software development, entertainment and real estate industries. He is a devoted family man, and a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who enjoys serving in the temple. Passionate about faith, family, and preserving heritage, he serves as Chairman of the Joseph and Hyrum Legacy Foundation, helping strengthen families and honor sacred legacies while inspiring others through service and adventure.

Chuck Cox, Board Member

Chuck Cox is a respected community leader from Washington State who brings a strong commitment to service, integrity, and helping organizations fulfill their missions. Throughout his personal and professional life, Chuck has demonstrated a passion for strengthening families, building meaningful relationships, and contributing his time and talents to causes that make a lasting difference.

Michael Freckleton, Board Member

Michael Freckleton is a retired physician specializing in diagnostic and interventional radiology. He currently serves as Vice Chairman and COO of the St. George Musical Theater.

A convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Michael has devoted much of his life to faith and service. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have served three missions together, including humanitarian service in Beirut, Lebanon, and medical service in North and South America.

His professional leadership, dedicated service, and commitment to faith and family bring valuable perspective to the Board.

John Hewlett, Board Member

John Hewlett has spent a lifetime in foundation and fundraising work, guiding estate planning for individuals and helping raise funds for causes ranging from Ronald McDonald House to LDS charities and the restoration of historic Kirtland, Ohio. For the past 17 years he has devoted himself to heart health through the science of nitric oxide, founding Cardio Miracle with a mission to "heal the hearts of mankind in the last days." A passionate believer in the gathering of latter-day Israel, he serves as the fundraising lead for the Joseph and Hyrum Legacy Foundation and recently co-authored Miracles in Polynesia with Dr. Bradley Nelson.

Dr Bradley Nelson, Board Member

Dr. Bradley Nelson is the founder of Discover Healing and the author of The Emotion Code and The Body Code — bestselling books translated into many languages that testify of basic gospel principles and teach people about the power of prayer and faith. Through a worldwide community of thousands of certified practitioners and events held across the globe, he has devoted his life to lifting others and helping to gather Israel. He also brings decades of experience in technology and AI, which he is eager to put to work in helping tell the story of Joseph and Hyrum.

Travis Osmond, Board Member

Travis Osmond has built a career centered on agriculture, land stewardship, and public service. His dedication to his community has also earned him recognition as Wyoming’s EMT of the Year.

A fifth-generation member of the Osmond family with roots in Star Valley, Wyoming, Travis has a deep appreciation for the area’s pioneer and agricultural heritage. He has also shared in his family’s musical legacy, playing bass guitar for his father and uncles in The Osmonds.

Travis brings to the Board a strong commitment to service, family, and preserving the values and heritage that connect generations. His professional experience, community involvement, and respect for family legacy make him a valued member of the Board.

Thales Smith, Board Member

Thales Smith is a retired educator who taught English, German, and Humanities at the secondary and university level for nearly 40 years. He has served as bishop and stake president and, with his wife Laura, as a senior missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He currently serves as a temple worker and as a patriarch.
